TWINS!!! Linthicum, MD :: Newborn Photographer

Last week I got to meet these tiny sweet girls. While the both shared many things alike being identical twins their personalities were completely opposite. One sister loved nothing more then nudging in close to the other, while that sister seemed to feel as though they had already spent enough time skin to skin and wanted her own space. After they both settled in and got comfy they both decided on a little bit of snuggle time, or rather it was decided for them!!

Just a few tiny peeps when we took them out of their swaddle blankets and other then that they were calm, and content just  enjoying the sunlight!

Mr. & Mrs. DeCarlo :: Frederick, MD Wedding Photographer

On March 8, we were fortunate enough to be asked to capture the wedding of Will and Coreen out in Frederick, MD.  The SMP girls LOVE to travel so we were definitely up for a little hour long road trip!  Frederick is beautiful and rural and its rolling hills provided a beautiful backdrop for photos.

We arrived at the beautiful Morningside Inn (www.morningside-inn.com) and got to work right away.  Our bride, Coreen, and her bridesmaids put the finishing touches on their makeup as the reception hall was being prepared.  We even got to be there when Coreen opened a surprise gift from her future husband…two Pandora charms that fit her style perfectly.  So romantic!

The sun began to lower in the sky and that’s how we knew it was almost time for the 6pm ceremony, but we just HAD to take full advantage of that gorgeous sunset!  We even managed to get a couple pre-ceremony photos of the bride and groom,  but we made extra sure that Will didn’t peek!

The ceremony was lovely, outside in a gazebo at dusk.  The groom’s father officiated which added a special touch to the I-do’s.

After the ceremony, everyone headed inside for the reception.  Dinner was served in the upstairs of the Inn.  Toasts were given, the food was enjoyed and then it was time head back downstairs to dance the night away!

Coreen and Will spent a lot of time on the dance floor with their friends and family, laughing and having a great time.  It was easy to tell they were a fun-loving couple.  A great majority of the guests stayed til the very last dance, and then sent the bride and groom off with bubbles and cheers!
Congratulations, Will and Coreen!  Very best wishes for a lifetime of happiness!

Capturing the Everyday ~Tips for the Momtographer

I post images from my clients sessions as well as my own family every day. If there is anything I get the most emails about it would have to be how I capture everyday moments, and dont make them looks posed, or fake, or stiff?
The first answer to this would be that, Posed, fake, and stiff are just not my style anyway, which can clearly be seen in my clients sessions, however the answer to your next questions would be, yes, we had a plan to take those photos, clothing was coordinated, a beautiful location was chosen, the weather was watched, and while not all shots of my clients are posed, or set up, there is direction happening at the sessions.

What about when it comes to your own children, not every mom wants a photo of the child that you placed on a couch, wearing a screen print T-shirt with a pink kool-aid stain on it, but you do want images of your child in their own element, that you can go back to these images and remember that stage of life.

THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED, but like everything else in life, it wont come easy or without any planning. So here are some tips to capture images that will be a slice out of your life.

DON'T BE PUSHY
These things cannot be forced or rushed, so while many of you who have booked with me know I sing crazy songs to your children during their session, and sometimes wear silly things on my head, this capturing of the moment wont happen that way. The second way it wont happen is if you force it.. you have to just let these moments happen. So now you are thinking.. "Ok SMP, if I can't encourage the shoot, nor can I force it, then how on earth will I capture it"... I will tell you!!!!!!

BE PREPARED
If there is a room in your home that gets alot of natural light, try to keep that room tidy, if you want to shoot in your back yard, clean up the piles of leaves from last fall, push the trash cans out of the way, and maybe buy that bench you have had your eye on at the antique store.

The next step to always being prepared, or atleast as prepared as you can, is keeping your camera out and somewhere you can grab it easily.. I keep mine on my breakfast bar, batteries are always charged and a memory card loaded.  Maybe you don't have a fancy camera.. well, while that certainly helps.. the camera is just the tool used for recording the scene, set up, or memory... its you who creates the masterpiece.

NOW WE WAIT
You read that right.. the opposite of not forcing something is letting it happen, and in order for something to just happen, you have to wait for it. Your child feels the spring breeze and begins to dance around the yard in the dreamy golden setting sun, but your car is right behind her... DO NOT MOVE HER, just wait... by moving her she will know you are watching and the innocence of the shot is gone, instead just wait.. wait for her to become distracted by a bird, or a flower and dance away from the thing you do not want in your shot, or move your body to see her from a different vantage point.

If you capture your tiny boy lining up the trains and you know he is about to get eye level with Thomas and start making a  choo choo sound, don't make any sound, grab your camera, lay down on your stomach on the ground, so that you are at his level and can capture this from his vantage point, and wait... wait for him to start pulling that truck along, and his face to light up as he enters into a state of imagination, and then start clicking, (after you have your setting right where you want them, but its ok, even if you didn't have time, many things can be edited.. and if you don't have an editing program I Do, and would be happy to enhance your images)

ONCE IT'S HAPPENING
JUST LET IT HAPPEN, please, please do me a favor and don't call out their name or ask them to look at you, don't tell them not to make that face, or to fix their hair... these are what will change the feel of this captured moment in their little lives. You want it to be raw, and in the moment.

I am thinking about holding a "Momtographer 101 Class" as well as a "Capturing the light just right" class for moms, if you are interested in this course which will be held in the Anne Arundel County area, please email me at sarahmichelephotography@gmail.com with the subject " MomTog class"

Mr. & Mrs. Houck :: Baltimore, MD Wedding Photographer

One of the coolest things about where SMP is located in Maryland is the rich history surrounding us.  We've got Annapolis, with its quaint downtown area right on the Chesapeake Bay, filled with historic brownstones.  And of course, we’re only about an hour’s drive from our nation’s capital.  A day trip to Washington DC always leaves me feeling sentimental and patriotic!   Then there’s Baltimore, whose seaports have helped make it one of the oldest cities in the United States.  Baltimore played a major part during the American Revolution and the Star Spangled Banner was even written just off of its shores. The wedding SMP was fortunate enough to capture on March 1st 2014 took place within a little slice of Baltimore history.

We arrived at the 1840’s Plaza (www.1840sballroom.com)  and knew instantly we were going to have some beautiful photos.  The vast classical windows generously provided prefect lighting throughout the hardwood-floor halls.  After acquiring some small detail shots, it was time to focus (pun intended!) on the gorgeous bride, Brittney.  She changed into her stunning all lace gown with her mother and her dearest friends at her side.

Meanwhile,  Adamm (the groom), and his groomsmen, his father, father in law and even the little ring bearer, were donning their matching grey Vans with purple laces!  And those guys rocked some awesome socks, too!

The ceremony and reception were held in the glamorous 1840s Ballroom.  The bride was escorted down the aisle by her father as live musicians added a special touch to the atmosphere.  The bride’s aunts gave special readings, Adamm and Brittney exchanged their vows, and then it was time to kick off the celebration.

The food really highlighted this reception.  Dinner was prepared and served by Rogue Fine Catering (www.RogueCatering.com)  and it was absolutely phenomenal.  Rogue’s signature salad, citrus herbed chicken, 5-Cheese macaroni and cheese, vegetable kabobs and a carving station serving up beef topped with caramelized onions…every single recipe was delicious!

Another stand-out during the reception was the matron of honor’s speech.  Katie, the bride’s sister in law, said a few words and then, joined by the other bridesmaids all wearing sunglasses, delivered an original rap performance.  The laughter and energy she provided set the mood for lots more dancing by guests and bridal party alike!

It was a good thing we all saved room for dessert!  At the dessert station, a small MAPLE BACON cake stood with a very significant cake topper – it was the same one that adorned the bride’s parent’s wedding cake.  Surrounding the unique cake, were dozens and dozens of cupcakes - strawberry cheesecake, red velvet and maple bacon!

Congratulations, Brittney and Adamm!  Your special day was joyful, elegant and delicious!  We were honored to be a part of it!

Tiny Little Man :: Glen Burnie, MD Newborn Photographer

I have had sooo many sweet babies to photograph over the past few weeks, I have loved every minute of it. I get my baby fix in, holding them, rocking them, and photographing them! This little guy was no different, he reminded me of my daughter when she was born, as she was also very tiny, and kept her brows furrowed.

This sweet little man, while he wasn't too interested in settling down and drifting off into a deep sleep, with a few sips of the bottle here and there he didn't really put up too much of a fight. Of course with daddy being in the military we instantly knew what our first posed shot would be!
